Job description

We are seeking a Senior Photonic Device Designer to develop next-generation silicon photonic devices for high-speed optical interconnects, AI infrastructure, networking, and advanced sensing applications. This role combines photonic device design, simulation, characterization, and laboratory validation to bring innovative optical technologies from concept through prototype development and product commercialization.


You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across photonics, electronics, systems, packaging, and manufacturing to create high-performance optical components for next-generation computing and communication platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative integrated silicon photonic devices for high-speed optical communication and sensing applications.
  • Perform photonic circuit layout, device design, verification, and design rule checking.
  • Evaluate, characterize, and optimize fabricated photonic devices through laboratory testing and experimental analysis.
  • Build and validate device prototypes to assess performance and manufacturability.
  • Develop measurement methodologies, automated test systems, and characterization procedures for optical devices.
  • Conduct electrical and optical experiments to validate device performance under various operating conditions.
  • Analyze experimental data and recommend design improvements based on performance, yield, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams including optical systems, electronics, packaging, process engineering, and manufacturing.
  • Support customer and internal engineering teams by investigating technical issues and developing innovative solutions.
  • Stay current with emerging photonics technologies and contribute to the advancement of next-generation optical products.

Qualifications

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Optoelectronics, or a related technical discipline (Ph.D. preferred), or equivalent industry experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in silicon photonics or integrated optoelectronic device development.
  • Strong experience in:
    • Silicon photonic device design, fabrication, and characterization.
    • High-speed optical modulators, lasers, photodetectors, and integrated optical components.
    • Electrical and optical testing, measurement techniques, and statistical data analysis.
    • Guided-wave optics, free-space optics, optical alignment, and fiber-to-waveguide coupling.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with high-speed optical test equipment, including:
    • Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWG)
    • Digital Communication Analyzers (DCA)
    • Vector Network Analyzers (VNA)
    • Bit Error Rate Testers (BERT)
  • Proficiency with photonic simulation tools such as:
    • Ansys Lumerical
    • Zemax
  • Experience using design and development tools including:
    • Cadence
    • MATLAB
    • Python
    • Verilog-A
  • Familiarity with CMOS fabrication processes and semiconductor manufacturing is highly desirable.

Compensation: Base salary is competitive and determined based on experience, qualifications, location, and internal equity. Equity and a comprehensive benefits package are included.
